A Familiar but Fascinating Mammal Roughly the size of a melon, the European hedgehog weighs between 600g and 1.2kg, depending on the season.  Its most distinctive feature — around 5,000–7,000 stiff spines — is actually made of modified hairs composed of keratin. When threatened, powerful back muscles contract to roll the hedgehog into a tight, prickly ball, protecting its vulnerable face and belly.
